Pierre-Louis Mascia

the story behind

There is a story behind every brand. In our category ‘Behind the Brand’ the designers share their candid insight about their inspiration, the design process, and the people behind the brand. We interviewed the French dessinateur Pierre-Louis Mascia to get to know him better and his eponymous brand with unpredictable classics.

What was the initial idea behind Pierre-Louis Mascia? How did it all begin in 2007?
I use to be a fashion illustrator and art director for the première classe. Back in the days there were just few scarf brands and since my childhood I was in love with this accessory. The scarf has become a shape to express myself, literally a ‘rectangle’ of expression.

How would you describe the aesthetic identity of Pierre-Louis Mascia?
Timeless, arty and unpredictable classic. I try to express the idea of a warm lux [a unity of illumination].

How did you develop your interest in art and fashion? Is it something you were interested in from a young age?
I think to be good fashion designer, you have to forget fashion. I think my interest for creations and being a creator came from my study at the Fine Arts Academy.

Do you have an icon or muse in mind while designing the collections?
It could be Marie Stuar, but it also could be Le Caravage. Soulage can be my contemporary inspiration.

“Everything starts with a dialogue."

What is your daily routine? Do you design from Toulouse, France?
Yes, I design in Toulouse but instead of daily routine I prefer to talk about rituals. Everything starts with a dialogue.

What is your favorite part about being a dessinateur? What did you learn from it?
To express what you have in mind. You discover that you are the real technology. You just need a sheet of paper and a pen.

What is the most crucial aspect of your designing process?
Mixing everything without any taboos and prejudices.

What is the most beautiful piece you have ever designed?
The future one.

How long does it take to produce a design such as the ‘Aleouw’ silk scarf?
Technically one month and a half.

How do you want women to feel when they wear Pierre-Louis Mascia?
I would like that woman feel free and in love like the barones Blixen in the roman “Out of Africa”.

What does Pierre-Louis Mascia contribute to sustainability?
Style and know how.

What is your greatest accomplishment with Pierre-Louis Mascia? What are you most proud of?
I am proud of following my ideas and never being exhausted by creation. When I start a collection, it always feels like the first time.

Can you share your favourite artisans with us?

Any future plans you would like to share with us?
