the charm of linen

Every fabric has its own charm. Linen is known for its airy and light weight quality, it is very strong and has a great ability to absorb moisture; making this natural material an essential addition to your lounge and summer wardrobe. At Pauw we love linen; our wide range of maxi dresses from Pauw and loose Xacus pants to timeless tops and shirts from Aspesi offer an extended choice for different occasions. Read on to discover all the brands that offer linen and learn about the characteristics and benefits of wearing airy linen.

Where does linen come from?

Linen is made from the fibers of a flax plant and is one of the oldest fabrics in the world. The history of linen begins in Egypt; when linen was used during mummification 36,000 years ago. The fabric symbolised cleanliness and wealth and was even used as a currency. Today, linen is mainly produced in the area between the French Caen and Amsterdam, because this is known for its rich soil and mild North Sea climate. Linen is also produced in Italy and Ireland, resulting in two variants: Irish linen is generally a bit thicker and firmer, and looks more formal due to its large folds. The Italian version, on the other hand, is woven thinner; due to this light weight structure it feels cooler and the wrinkles are smaller.

Linen in spring and summer

The breathability of linen combined with its ability to absorb moisture, makes it the ultimate material to wear when the temperature rises. The fabric does not only feel comfortable and cool, but also looks summerly: this is the result of the natural fiber, which, thanks to the vegetable weave, ensures wrinkles and folds. Especially the light weight Italian linen, for example from Aspesi or Xacus, is a good choice for tropical days.

The airy quality with irregularities here and there gives a natural and elegant touch to any outfit, but the creases and folds also accentuate the casual character of the fabric. Depending on the colour combination, linen can therefore be worn both classic and casual. A ton-sur-ton look, combined with suede or leather loafers and a classic handbag, creates an elegant look. To create a casual outfit, combine an oversized linen shirt with jeans and sneakers.
